The 2020 pandemic demonstrated that remote work through Teams, Zoom, and similar platforms is possible. However, after about a year, it became evident that social interaction among employees had significantly decreased.
MorphoSys AG recognized this shift and expressed a strong desire to revitalize its corporate culture — in short, to bring people back into the office.
Together with Gerd Krohn from smartvillage GmbH, I developed the transformation concept “Our Workspace for Tomorrow” for MorphoSys AG. Workshops with employees identified missing needs, required tools, and environments that would foster productive and enjoyable work.
Five Activity-Based Working modules were created:
TEAM EXPERIENCE – fostering team spirit and
company culture (e.g., community kitchen)AGILE WORKSHOP – flexible spaces with mobile furniture
HYBRID WORKSHOP – meeting rooms designed
for hybrid collaborationFOCUS TIME – quiet zones for concentrated work
or private 1:1 conversationsESCAPE – temporary areas for short, spontaneous tasks
The overall design concept was based on “The Earth’s Vegetation Zones.” Each of the building’s four floors
received a distinct climate zone: Alpine (4th), Nordic (3rd), Mediterranean (2nd), Desert (1st), Tropical (Ground floor).
This approach created a flexible, collaborative, and inspiring work environment throughout the building.
